Australia’s Juli Grbac Uncovers India’s Fashion Secrets

Juli GrbacBrisbane fashion designer Juli Grbac (left), winner of Project Runway Australia 2008, has been invited by trade fair organizers to show an Indian-inspired collection at Brand India.
Brand India is organized by the Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council ( TEXPROCIL ) and sponsored by the Government of India. It aims to bring together established Indian companies with new talent who offer cutting-edge design.
Grbac, meanwhile, says that her recent trip to Delhi uncovered India’s superior manufacturing and craftsmanship. ‘As a designer, it was like discovering gold. I saw some of the most beautiful beadwork and fabrics I had ever seen,’ she says.
‘The French seams and double-roll hems are of the highest quality … This is what Australia needs to see.’

Mumbai, The Modern Side

I know there is still poverty and hardship in Mumbai, but there is also a richer, modern side that Stanley Moss got to see when he had an extended stay in India. The Four Seasons Hotel Mumbai, already open, but going fully online in September, shows that the Indians can do luxury city hotels as well as anyone else.
We already know India is home to top-notch properties like the Manor, which we pro?led last month , but Four Seasons gives a comfortable level of predictability in terms of amenities, while still providing some uniqueness inspired by the area.
In Mumbai’s case it’s the San-Qi restaurant and a yoga and meditation room.
The first property ever reviewed by Lucire was a Four Seasons, and I had the privilege of staying at the Regent Bangkok, which was another Four Seasons property, despite the name.
Cars are always my way of telling how af?uent a place is—or, in some cases, how deep the division between rich and poor is. The Four Seasons Mumbai can chauffeur you in a BMW 7-series limousine, so anyone expecting a ride from the airport in a Hindustan Ambassador will have to head to the taxi rank for that experience. In the car park are newish Hondas and Marutis and the top luxury brands.
India is busting stereotypes every day as it grows in in?uence and af?uence, all while retaining democratic freedoms. It’s the country I have my eye on as this century unfolds, rather than Red China. I’m trusting that the theory that strong economies help the poor holds up in I...

Welcome To Vogue India: It’s About Time

As someone who has long championed the Asian subcontinent —and Lucire has been linking Indian and Pakistani sites as they came to light over the years—I was happy to see that Vogue India has made it on to newsstands. The new magazine is a milestone in the rise of the subcontinental fashion industry, which arguably has had a longer tradition than anything in the occident. It also signals a rise in global luxury brands entering India—something which I hope will soon be more of a two-day street.
The cover, too, addresses concerns that I expressed in a blog post last week , on the ubiquity of the white model on catwalks. There has been some chatter about why Gemma Ward, a blonde, blue-eyed model, occupies a third of the cover, but the answer is fairly simple, I thought: Vogue India is evidently a magazine that appeals to the global nature of the Indian consumer. Her presence suggests that in a shot. But the international girl is usually quite desirable from a publisher’s or licensee’s eyes, too.
As a man, I have to say that my eyes went to the other models first: Bipasha Basu, Priyanka Chopra, Monikangana Dutta, Preity Zinta and Laxmi Menon grace the cover and gatefold, photographed by Patrick Demarchelier. Perhaps it is the ubiquity that I wrote about, but the south Asian models are stunning.
The domestic cover girl is very important, as we learned with Lucire Romania . The original cover girl—Karen Carreño—made le...
